Functional testing refers to tests that verify a specific action or function of an application. Functional testing is performed by testers. Usability testing is a technique used to evaluate a product by testing it on users. For example, when a tester finds that a text box is not validating properly, he has discovered a functional defect. When a user doesn't understand a validation message because it uses technical jargon, this would be considered a usability defect.
It is a good idea to differentiate where defects originate in order to more practically assess a defect's Severity and Priority and many quality managment systems include a "Where found" field that helps identify the source of a defect as being functional (found by tester) or usability (found by end-user).
Some software test teams have extended the definition of usability defect to include any defect that describes a lack of intuitiveness when using an application.

First Ans: In a real time scenario, it never happens. If you would have SRS, then and only then you would start your software development which gets tested.In absence of SRS, it's domain expert or seniors who can help to desing test cases. This is nearer to ad-hoc testing.

In Web Testing, you test the application with different browsers and different versions of the same browsers. Here, you would be concentrating on User Interface, Functionality and Performance of the application. In Client Server Testing, you don?t require any media/browser to test the application.
A higher degree of Security, Performance and Reliability testing is required for web based applications than client server applications becoz web based applications are multi user applications whereas client server applications are single user applications.
If the database is changed in client server application, the front end source code needs to be changed where as in web based, if the database changes, only the middleware has to be changed accordingly as client never interacts with the server directly. The business logic is @ middleware in web based application where as the same is at client in fat client/thin server architecture and at server in thin client/fat server architecture.

Some of the answers are close but missed the entire point of planning.. You should handle test automation as a project. Each project should consist of areas that have been targeted for test automation and then need to be planned out as and other type of project: This of course assumes that you already have in place what makes a test a candidate for test automation and approved by the required resources…as well as defined and have in place your framework and all automation artifact needed to make this this a successful development project. But as a minimum the plan should include:
1. Introduction
What is the automation objectives2. Scope
What we are automating3. Test Strategy
The strategy is to automate the scope4. Test Schedule
What is the timeframe for completion? What is the execution schedule?5. Functions to Be Tested
List what we are testing/verifying and how…the flow can go here as well6. Resources and Responsibilities
Who do we need to do this and what parts will they be automating, setting up, etc.
8. Deliverables
What will we be turning over once completed? Automated scripts for one.9. Dependencies
What do we need to be in place, setup, etc to do this?10. Risks

I use automated testing tools for regression testing. It saves me time of repeating the tests, feeding data/retrieving data manually into/from the application under test. Also, I can ensure that no functionality is missed during testing.
