First of all, how do you define QA?  Are you referring only to the portion of the team that takes measures to prevent defects, or are you referring to the entire test team?  Different companies have different views on QA.  

As for me, QA and test are quite different.  QA focuses on measures to prevent defects while testing focuses measures to detect and report defects.  QA is more process-centric while testing is more product-centric.  

So what is QA's most important impact on a company?  Generally, I believe it is its quest to improve the company's bottom line by implementing ways to improve processes and minimize errors.
