A metric is a derived (calculated or composite) unit of measurement that cannot be directlyobserved, but is created by combining or relating two or more measures. A metric normalizes data so that comparison is possible.

Measurement is one which quanitfies an activity or characteristic of an object.

Example: One person produced 20 pieces is a measurement. That person worked 8 hours is a measurement. That employee produced 20 pieces in 8 hours is a metric.

A measurement is the act of comparing something to a standard in order to ascertain a particular characteristic about that thing.

A metric is the degree to which something possesses a particular attribute

A metric is the result of a measurement.

EXAMPLE:

Saying that there were 20 defects over a test cycle would be a metric.

                                    20 defects / test cycle

The act of obtaining this information would be its measurement.
