it is the process of methodically reducing the huge(infinite) set of possible
test cases into much smaller groups, but still equally effective set

dividing the domain into equivalent classes.it contains both valid and invalid classes.
from these classes we select the test data for the testcases.

Equivalence class is used to avoid when the same test cases has been repeated .So repeatability test cases are put in to equivalence class and will be run once .

If a set of object can be linked by a relationship that is symmetric, reflexive and transitive then we can say there is equivalance class. Using this concept Equivalence Partitioning method of Black Box Testing devides the input domain of a program into classed of data, from where test cased can be derived.Ideally each testcase can uncover class of errors that might otherwise requires many testcases to be executed before genetal error is observed.

Based on the property of input/ output variables the input/output domain is divided in to equal class.equivalence class means the class of input varibles for which the system behaves similarly.

An equivalence class is a collection whose members have an identical characteristic.  This concept is used in testing in order to reduce the number of inputs by selecting only a few representative members from the equivalent class.
