There might be various tools that you as a business analyst would be using depending upon the work environment.
The primary tools are:
MS-Office (Especially Word)
MS-Visio (for visualizing the concepts, creating diagrams)
But a lot of bigger organizations have been using Rational Software. Rational software licensing is expensive so you might not find it being used everywhere.
Rational Requisite Pro (for Requirement Management)
Rational ClearCase/ClearQuest (For change management)
I have also found that some places like using MS-Sharepoint, telelogic DOORS and other tools for document collaboration. I would say, keep a working knowledge of MS Sharepoint, at least.
Sometimes you might end up being a BA com QA. As such, it is nice to have a working knowledge of creating Test cases, using Load Runner, QTP etc.
Except for these tools if you have knowledge of RDBMS, Oracle, SQL, different operating systems, some OOP, it is always a plus.
Most of the business analysts use following Tools:
- Microsoft Office
- Microsoft Visio
- IBM Requisite Pro
- BPMN 2.0
- SharePoint
Offcourse most important tools are communication skill and interpretation power.
As mentioned out by some of the incumbents here, Business Analysis is more to do with documentation of the requirements and how efficiently the expert communicates information across to the team devel...

Dear Friends
I have read most of the answers and I am impressed the way people resolve the Issues...But I am sorry to say most of the people forgot that they are attending this question in a Business Analyst interview.
The meaning for this question is as a business analyst how do you resolve issues?
not only in your team but the problems faced while you were at clients place( while gathering requirements)
Lets take an example of improper requirements: If two department people are giving the requirements and if they have some common resources to use...so one department people wants the application in some way and the other department wants in otherway...If they are adament on their statements and wants the application to be developed in their way....which is not feasible ...then we have to follow these steps
1. Explain them clearly what we can not build an application until and unless they agree and stick to single opinion.
2. If they still do not understand tell them about the time constraint. man hours wastage and money loss for their own company if they try to prolong the issue.
3. Even if they donot agree then report this issue to the your higher authority which is project manager or Principle BA to look in to this matter which he inturn speaks to the client regarding this issue.
similarly if you have any issues regarding communication and it is better you convince your client if you can use any recorder to record the requirements which you can later analyse or ask for the help of interpreter.
so these are all the steps usually a BA should follow to resolve any issue.
please do correct me if anybody disputes with my opinion.
Best Regards

It depends on the project to project it is not always the same that we do interect with the clients directy, some time there will be a team whom might be interecting with the client and gives you the requirement and if have questions either we do talk with that team or our maganer.
Yes, they can interact with the clients directly, since a client can be internal like the end users, managers and supervisors within the company.
