NIS is used to centralize all network admin information in one system. like passwd,hosts,groups, shadow etc

Well, NIS is important because, in a large network environment it is not a good idea to put user credentials in all of them, that is to say, there is a network of 50 sun servers, now if a new user is to be created either that user shall be added manually in all the servers or create a central NIS server where in all the user's credentials are saved so whenever a user logs into any server, the authentication is done at the NIS server , thus making an intelligent one place managemnt. NIS and NIS+ are very widely used just because of this ability.
