Basically there are two type of foundations according their depths

a. Shallow foundations
b. Deep foundations

Shallow foundations are the foundation which are not at greater depths and deeper foundations are the foundations at greater depths.

According to their shapes and functionality following are the types

a. Isolated footing - meant to transfer the load from individual column to soil

b. Combined footing - when the isolated footing interfere each other due to closeness of the columns , a common footing i.e. one footing is recommended which transfers the load of both the columns to the soil i.e. hard strata.

c. Stepped footing - is generally provided for load bearing wall footing.

d. Raft footing - When the total footing area required for the columns is almost same as the total plan area in which building has to be erected , it is recommended to go for raft footing which is a single slab with heavy reinforcement. Generally such footings are casted for high rise buildings.
