STP is used in catalyst switches,it's mainly used for loop avodiance over switched networks by blocking the retedent links.its uses the BPDU-bridged protocal data unit (like an boomerang) it will send it to all the  links connect switch, if SPT get back that same information it find the loop append in the network and block the retudent link. it's block the link base on the cost of the link.here cost is bandwith.cisco used the calculation Cost = 10^/Bandwith on the link.  Based on this the lowest cost link will be blocked.SO the STP provides loop free,retedent support and an uninterpet connectivity over the corprate networks.
