RE: Most important knowledge area of PMBOK
I would say the Scope Management Plan (SMP) is probably the most important knowledge area. The SMP defines the project boundaries i.e. what is included and what is excluded. It identifies what the project is supposed to deliver the work that will be done to deliver the project (work break down structure) acceptance criteria for the deliverables (conditions or capabilities that must be met) project assumptions etc.

Projects with unclear scope statements never seem to end hence the main purpose of Project Management which is to deliver a project on time within budget and scope cannot be fulfilled if scope planning is not done properly up front.
