Synchronous condenser is synchronous motor running in over excited condition..

When Synchronous Motor's field winding is 'Over Excited' it supplies the KVARs
back to the the supply lines. This property is similar to the
Capacitor/Condenser. Hence its name.

Synchronous condenser is used for power factor improvement device in power station. Normally the fact that all the running electrical components are induction type so the power factor will be lagging nature.

Synchronous condenser is operating on no load along with over excited condition so it takes leading current during its operation. These device connected parallel to the transmission lines it gives leading power factor the transmission lines already have lagging power factor thus the net power factor will be almost unity for better utilization.

To provide reactive power, synchronous motor is operated in over-excited and no load condition. Usually we use condenser (capacitor bank) for this purpose.
