another way of doing...a bit lengthy.
speed in still water 0.5(speed up+speed down) 10
0.5((24/t)+(16/t) 10.
therefore time t 2hrs
rate of stream 0.5(speed upstream-speed down)
rate of stream 0.5((24/2)-(16/2)) 2kmph.

the time taken by the boat in donw stream the time taken by the boat in up stream i.e. (24/(10+x)) (16/(10-x)) where x in the speed of the water 2kmph.

Speed in still water 10 kmph
stream speed x kmph

down stream speed 10 + x
upstream speed 10 - x

24 / (10 + x ) 16 / (10 - x )

240 - 24 x 160 + 16 x

80 40 x
x 2 kmph
