Where TRACEABILITY MATRIX's are used in projects at real time?

This question was asked to me in the interview.. please answer anyone and clear my doubt friends

The most practical application of a traceability matrix is to map requirements to test cases and then verify that all requirements have been adequately covered by test cases.  The is done after all of the test cases have been prepared.

Traceability means trace something.

In testing which is used to maping between test cases and test requirements

Test requirements may be Usecase or SRS or FRS anything but test reqirement should be which document have been used to write a test cases.

Which is prepared after preparing test cases and before excuting test cases, to know whether all the test requirtements have been covered by test cases.
