Actually it is a kind of shortcut to get the access of shared folder.. computer checks connectivity every time when you log on.

Actually Mapping a Network drive is kind of creating a short cuts of network folder. We can map that drive the offline availability by configuring in properties. if the network fail to connect you can still access those file from mapped drives when it configured in offline. So the mapping of a network drive more help to access the file easily.
