instance names are abbreviated names assigned by the kernel for each device on the system

an instance name is a shortened name for the physical  device name

example:


sd n: where sd is a disk name and n  is the number ,such as sd0 for the first SCSI disk device

dad n: where dad is the diskname and n  is the number ,such   as dad0  for the first ide  disk device

instant name is calle kernal abbreviated name for all connected hardware, these instant name varies according to the hardware manufacturer. all these instant name is stored under
/etc/path_to_inst file

note: if /etc/path_to_inst file is deleted or corrupted system will not come to multi user mode
