Generic extraction in SAP ECC

can you explain the real time scenario in which we use generic extraction in SAP ECC for SD,FI etc

first we install the bi content data source. if any customization fields, add fields extract structure, Replicate the data source into bw it reads complete metadata of the data source and maintain time stamp of the data source. then our data source name info source select and install and migrate the data source into bi with export.
