What are my options when I do not get a job after graduation?

  |  Published On : 05 Oct, 2011

Dear All,

Often, I receive questions from users asking me for suggestion and solution when they do not get a job even after completing their studies. While everyone aim to get a good job right after completing their studies, most of them will find it difficult to find a job. The reason could vary from one to many. I have compiled few important aspects and tips that will help those who are facing this dilemma. Let me explain "What to do if you do not get job after completing your studies?"

Every student aspires to get a job as soon as they graduate from college. You spend four years in high school, and another four to five years in college and get a degree, which qualify you to work in a job you have always dreamed about.

The truth is, landing your dream job is not as easy as it seems. You may have a college degree but that alone will not fully guarantee you an employment. Thousands of fresh graduates are out looking for a job, and competition can be tough.

The reality is that not only will you be competing with your classmates and other fresh graduates, but you will also come head to head with laid off workers and other unemployed people out there. If you are worried about not getting a job after you have completed your studies, let me give you few tips that will help you cope and perhaps even get you employed.

Coping Tips

In spite of a seemingly bleak future that awaits you, there are few good options that you can explore to deal with being unemployed.

  • Look for unpaid internships. Although you will not get any income from such internships, they will nevertheless help you hone your skills and give you the experience you need to become a more valuable candidate for job openings in your field of expertise.
  • Start your own business. A lot of job seekers have become entrepreneurs and business owners, and some have even become quite successful. Opening up a business requires a capital and a solid business plan so before take this route make sure you meet both the requirements.
  • Change your career direction. Perhaps the job market for your specific major is already quite saturated; in this case, it would be wiser to seek alternative options where you will stand a better chance of getting a job.

Tips to Help You Get a Job

Finding employment can be easy for some, however for most job seekers, it turns out as a difficult task. If you have spent months applying from one company to another unsuccessfully, here are some tips:

  • Stay positive. Being unemployed months after your graduation can dampen anyone’s spirit but you must strive to stay positive. Do not lose hope and do not give up.
  • Improve your skills. You are more likely to land a job if you possess important job skills. Make sure your qualifications, skills, talents, and achievements are properly highlighted in your resume.
  • Assess yourself. Ask yourself, “What could be the reason why I’m still unable to get a job until now?”
Is it because I lack confidence?
Is it because I do not possess good interpersonal skills?
Find out the answers and endeavor to correct them.
  • Consider relocating. The economic downturn has certainly caused a lot of companies to seize hiring and even retrench their employees. If this is the reason why you are having a hard time getting a job, consider the possibility of moving to another city, state, or even country where there is still a sufficient demand for job seekers with your qualification, skills, and background.

Hopefully, the tips I have provided above will help you to get a job soon. I wish you the best of luck!. Feel free to contact me if you have any career related questions.
