Why and when we use single phase and three phase?

This is the most common question.
Whenever we are dealing with large quantity of power we use the Three phase system rather than the single phase system. The cause is the cost of eqipment is more.
The above is valid only when the power is large.
For example a 100MVA rated single phase generator is more costlier than the three phase generator of same rationg.

If we think your question in some other view(application view) Mostly In transmission and Generation side the Three phase is used, for distribution sector single phase is used.
