These are the following reasons for failure of Generator:
1) Failure in prime mover
2)
Failure in field winding

The above reasons are the basic requirements for to run Generator

Major Problems due to:
1) Sudden change in Load in case of motors
2) short circuit of transmission lines i.e Faults

Due to above the motor of generator makes oscillations if that oscillations
equals to the natural frequency of the system then generator loose its
synchronism.

A generator is made of the drive and the driven. The drive is the engine and the driven is the alternator. Breakdown can be from the engine or the alternator.
If the engine is weak due to worn out rings, weak crank shaft, it can breakdown on load.
Again if the engine is not service when due flowing the stipulated maintenance procedure,it can lead to breakdown. When radiator is low in water, poor cooling could result to burning of top cylinder gasket which will allow water to mix with the engine oil etc
On the alternator, the windings should be protected against short circuit, poor insulation. Electronic components of the generator can go bad  and result to complete failure of the generator. These include the AVR, electronic speed governor etc.
