Jmeter is one open source tool which is very effective for web based applications. It really works well with almost all technologies i:e .Net, Java etc.

Hi

First of all web based applications testing means it can be functional testing GUI testing load stress performance etc...

So we can use individual tool to evaluate the web application i dont know much about the open source tools i know only licenced tools.

Functional : QTP bad boy ( open source)

Load : Load runner Webload ( open source)

Selenium is one the best web application functional testing tool available. It is open source tool and currently available in three mode.

1. Selenium IDE (Record and play back)
2. Selenium RC (Test in your choice of language)
3. Selenium Grid (Cross browsers and OS)

As per your requirement you can choose anyone of them.
