Power Play transformer supports wide range of Local Data Sources, you cannot connect to SQL Server Directly without creating IQD's.  Below is he list of data sources which you can use as Data Sources.

• Impromptu query definition files (.iqd), which can query local or server-based databases• delimited ASCII files (.asc) and comma-separated variable files (.csv)• fixed-field text files• local databases, including Microsoft Access, which can specify SQL queries against local orserver-based databases, Clipper, dBase, FoxPro, and Paradox• PowerHouse portable subfilesSpreadsheet crosstabs and databases, including Excel and Lotus 1-2-3

From the 8.3 version of Cognos you can use even a more wider variety of datasources than you could use previuosly

You can just publish a package from Framework manager and use it as a source for creating cubes, no need of creating an IQD

You can also use any Cognos 8 Report as a source.
