As a tester you need not have too much of an interaction with the user as this should be done before hand by the Analyst or Developer or who ever is building the tool. You should interact with the documentation that is given. The documentation that is provided should capture all the requirements that the user has.

The only trouble when you interact with a user is that, if you get some input from the user and find a defect in the application, and if that requirement is not in the functional specs provided to you then...the after results depend on the company rules... the development team might feel that you are interfering in their job by interacting directly with the client... or if you are lucky enough they might accept your input and change the documentation a bit so that the new system will have this requirement too...but believe me the first option is the one which is likely to happen...
