jar file are actually " Java Archive Files".It is an zip file.It enables you to bundle multiple files into a single archive file.It contains : class files and  auxiliary resources associated with  applets and application.
Other benefits os jar files are
1)compression 2)decreased download time 3)security 4)portabi;ity
