Functional design document and technical design documents are the basis for preparing testcases. this documents includes the specifications and requirements of the client. These documents help us to get familiar with the client requirements. We have to start preparing the testcases after thorough with client requirements.Thorough study helps to write all testcases without missing any client requirements, which further helps in testing all the client requirements.

I base test cases on any information which identifies our company's intent for the product as long as it can be verified with a true or false (pass or fail) result.  I find this information in:

1) Software Requirements Specification
2) Functional Requirements Document
3) Business Requirements Document
4) Work-flow Diagrams
5) Wireframes
6) Mock-ups
7) Claims made in Marketing materials and brochures
8) End-User License Agreement (EULA)
9) Information found in Help text
10) Customer Support documentation and knowledge base

This is not an exhaustive list.
