The crankshaft is that part of an engine which translates reciprocating linear piston motion into rotation. To convert the reciprocating motion into rotation, the crankshaft has "crank" or "crankpins", additional bearing surfaces whose axis is offset from that of the crank, to which the "big ends" of the connecting rods from each cylinder attach.

Crankshaft is a component of engine, which transmits power developed in combustion chamber to flywheel with the help of connecting rod. Reciprocating motion of piston is converted to rotary motion with the help of connecting rod which connects piston and crankshaft.
