How to convert a single phase supply to a 3 phase balanced supply?

The are two methods.1. First convert 1-ph AC into DC by using converter, then that DC is converted to AC by using the power electronic circuit named as three phase inverter using any modulation technique.2. Give single ph. AC supply to an induction motor(IM), couple the shaft of IM to an three phase alternator or an induction generator. But we may not get constant frequency.So the first method is preferable.
