If you've gotten yourself into a position where there is no more space on the file system, then you have not been doing your job as the administrator.

But we'll take you out and whip you for your failure later. In the meantime, you have a problem to solve. Your first order of business is to get space from somewhere.

Where you get that space depends on your individual situation. Are there core files you can remove? Is there a user who's no longer with the company who's files can be purged? Can you attach a new hard drive? Can you duplicate the smaller disk on to a larger disk? Are there obsolete backup files you can remove? Is there a tape device (with fresh tapes) available to offload stuff?

Get that space, make your backups, then report for your whipping.

you can also try using remote backup so you can dump to another server with available space. of course you have to configure the interfaces between the servers to allow this.
