ac  is preffered for current transmission because ac allows high-voltage power transmission from the power generatin plant to the consumer.

AC current can easily step-up or step-down by using transformers. Where as in DC its difficult to step-up or step-down.
Also most of the electrical equipments that we are using for transmission purpose or for domestic purpose are AC operating.

Alternating current is used for transmission because it is easier to transmit AC over high distance at high Voltage levels.
It is also more flexible to handle AC at different levels of transformation than DC.
A transformer can simply be used to reduce ac to any voltage level while DC will require rectification of the ac to DC, inversion of the DC transmitted back to AC which may not be convenient when compared to transformers. Again the current transmitted is very low in AC.

To reduce I-squared x R loss, transmission is done at voltages much higher than what is usable by consumers.  Transformers can easily raise AC voltage for transmission and then lower it for consumption.  The same cannot be done for DC power.
