What is "the direction of causation" between variables in regression analysis?

Direction of causation is used in root cause analysis as it about analysing the direction of the error happened.
Eg: If in a field if we enter a quantity of numbers then and the system in not prosessng the request we can assume that this error is because of large data and will check others fields by entering large data and if these fields also doesn't handle large data that means the large number of data is not handled in the entire system.
