RTOS stands for "REAL TIME OPERATING SYSTEMS". These are used in real time applications, usually in embeded systems.

RTOS is a real time operating system. the main difference between an operating system and RTOS is the response time.

An operating system will or may response for the user input at any time....  But a RTOS should response for the input with in a finite time. it should not delay like an ordinary operating system. Thats why in many electronic applications RTOS is used...
