Let x be the number of student in the class.
16*x + 40 = 17(x+1)
x = 40 - 17 = 23.

let the total no of students is x ;then the sum of ages of 16 stuidents will be 16*x ; when the teachers age is included then the total ages will be (16*x + 40)So now the average age of (x+1) 17 )given in the question) ( 16*x + 40 ) / (x+1)On solving this equeation we will get x 23 So the total no of students in th class is 23 .
