Ans. 23
Let x be the number of student in the class.
16*x + 40 = 17(x+1)
x = 40 - 17 = 23.

let the total no of students is = x ;then the sum of ages of 16 stuidents will be 16*x ; when the teachers age is included then the total ages will be = (16*x + 40)So now the average age of (x+1) = 17 )given in the question) = ( 16*x + 40 ) / (x+1)On solving this equeation we will get x = 23 So the total no of students in th class is 23 .

Given avg=16, let no of students before = n

so sum  = 16n

after teacher's age is considered = (sum+40)/(n+1 ) = 17    (given)

equating both sums: 16n= 17(n+1) -40

n=23
