Here is a very short list of basic tasks for which a network administrator may be responsible:

  • Setting up and configuring network hardware and software
  • Installing and configuring network media and connections
  • Connecting user nodes and peripherals of all kinds to the network
  • Adding users to and removing users from the network
  • Managing user accounts, such as passwords, storage space, and file-access privileges
  • Creating and maintaining a system for backing up data and program files
  • Ensuring the security of the network
  • Managing the organization's e-mail system
  • Managing users' ability to access the Internet via the network
  • Training users to utilize the network's resources

The role of a Network Engineer is as follow:

To manage tasks associated with the upgrade or enhancement to the local area network (LAN), wide area networks (WAN) and Internet links.
• To assist with strategies for improvement to the Internet/ Intranet structure (Internet and Intranet Servers, Proxy Servers and Firewalls.
• To assist with implementing a robust infrastructure for content delivery over the Internet

· Manage servers, including e-mail, print, internal services for source control, wiki and issue tracking as
well as
· Maintain and verify backup servers/systems.
· Manage security solutions, including firewall, anti-virus, and intrusion detection systems.
· Manage all network hardware and equipment, including routers, switches, hubs, and UPSs.
