Conversion :

it means to convert from one location to another location or

convert one system to another system it means convert external system to oracle apps.

Extension menas to extend means incresing the functionality

Extensions are literally extensions to Oracle Apps.

About conversions (if seen independent of extensions) i feel its more to conversions used for currency conversion. Types : corporate etc

Conversion is transfer of legacy system flat file data into oracle apps tables or from oracle apps table data to flat files like interface but it is a one time data transfer.

Extensions is used for form development/form customization.
