The  DSS is (Decision  Support System) used for the   decision making  purposes, not for day-2 day issues.by the top level/ sr/middle level managments people in a  established company.

but the OLTP  SYSTEMS handles the day-day transactions, data entries, billing etc issues .

The  DSS  WILL  be handled by only a   few  users , especially

top poeple in the   corporate ladder hence The number of users who  are making  use of DSS are  less.

but in OLTP(ONLINE   TRANSACTION PROCESSING) the number  of the   users are  high, since no such kind of decision making is entailed.

A data warehouse is a database geared towards the business intelligence requirements of an organisation. The data warehouse integrates data from the various operational systems and is typically loaded from these systems at regular intervals. Data warehouses contain historical information that enables analysis of business performance over time

Okay there are two camps on this Bill Inmon which is Date and Coddbased database design that has grown into the ODS reporting DSS database and of course Ralph Kimball whose mythology comprises of a star schema and dimension modeling... I could go on and on but basically a data warehouse is a database that is specifically designed for reporting, I leave Inmon to the oltp ODS and a true data wareshouse to Ralph Kimball. When I have to interview a data warehouse DBA et al the first question I ask "who is Ralph Kimball and can you tellme about the data warehouse toolkit"
