when we rotate the paddle of a bicycle in the forward direction ,the chain moves the axle which eventually moves the back wheel.but when it is rotated backward the chain does move while the axle does not.It just slide over the axle. This is because a number of small strips(localy known as "kutta") which function as a lock.they just slide over the axle making only chain to roate while reverse paddling .when we paddle forward these strips get stuck to the internally made teeths of the gear present on axle ,thus moving the axle along with gear which is ultimately moved by the chain .
