In India, the word CST represents Central Sales Tax for sending goods to interstates & the word GST represents General Sales Tax for sending goods within the state.  The CST & GST Nos. will be allotted to every trader/manufacturer by respective State Commercial Tax Offices where the trader is located.  For example, one person is selling some goods to some buyer within state, he should mention the GST No. in dispatching documents.  Likewise, the CST No. should be mentioned in dispatching documents when interstate transactions happened.  The Rate of tax will vary depending on the commodities sent. Now, VAT is introduced almost in all states of India.

CST (Central Sales Tax) is a form of indirect tax imposed only on goods sold from one state to another state, which particularly takes into account that the buyer and the seller needs to be in two different states.

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a value-added tax levied on most goods and services sold for domestic consumption. The tax is levied to provide revenue for the federal government. The GST is paid by consumers, but it is levied and remitted to the government by businesses selling the goods and services.
