Does stress testing to be done manually?

If yes then how will you perform Stress Testing of a web based application manually?

When we test an application by give stress to it. It is usually done with hardware as we can take an example, suppose 20 task run simultaniusly on a system with 1 GB RAM, then to reduce the RAM to 512 MB then try to run 20 task simultaneouly  this is called stress testing.
