Hi friend the R/3 means Realtime three tyre Architecture.

3tyre ac means there will be three servers 
1) Goalden server.
2) Mainframe server.
3) Presentation server.

This is provided to increase the speed of response an to increase the data storage space in SAP.

R/3---Realtime 3 tier architecture.

3 tier means--- 1) Presentation Layer
                         2)  Application Layer
                         3) database layer.

Presentation layer ----- it is the your system desktop, there are having in sap icon.

Application Layer ----- your write the code here.

Database Layer---- here store the sap data.
