When computers communicate with each other, there needs to be a common set of rules and instructions that each computer follows. A specific set of communication rules is called a protocol.
Because of the many ways computers can communicate with each other, there are many different protocols -- too many for the average person to remember. Some examples of these different protocols include PPP, TCP/IP, SLIP, HTTP, and FTP.

Protocol usually refers to a set of rules that define an exact format for communication between systems. For example the HTTP protocol defines the format for communication between web browsers and web servers the IMAP protocol defines the format for communication between IMAP email servers and clients and the SSL protocol defines a format for encrypted communications over the Internet.

Sets of rule means how to tranfer data from one location to other.
