"Protocol" usually refers to a set of rules that define an exact format for communication between systems. For example the HTTP protocol defines the format for communication between web browsers and web servers, the IMAP protocol defines the format for communication between IMAP email servers and clients, and the SSL protocol defines a format for encrypted communications over the Internet.

When computers communicate with each other, there needs to be a common set of rules and instructions that each computer follows. A specific set of communication rules is called a protocol. Because of the many ways computers can communicate with each other, there are many different protocols -- too many for the average person to remember. Some examples of these different protocols include PPP, TCP/IP, SLIP, HTTP, and FTP.

In few words protocols are just set of rules and regulation which are defined by to send data on internet in a specific manner. If we talk about sending data on internet, it is done by OSI model s network layer.

On layer third what actually happen?
In a network there are a lots of PC, routers and switch, which have protocols like ospf, eigrp, rip etc. They determine the path by which the information will go on outer world.
