so cow boy is standing 5 km south of stream ..

and he is 8 km west and 6 km south from  cabin so

applying pythagoras theorm shortest distance is  sqrt 8^2+6^2=10

and 5 km from river

so total he need to travel 10+5=15 km

He goes 5km to the stream.

Now he is 5+6 km North of his cabin and 8 km east.
apply pyth -> sqrt(11^2+8^2)

He travels sqrt(185)+5 ~= 18.6
