It is an interactive process of concurrent product exploration, test design and test execution.

the tester designs and executes tests while learning the product

the tests are captured as potential issues to look for rather than detailed test cases or scenarios

exploratory testing is useful when

1) you are asked to test something in short notice

2)test early in the development process

3) in situations with minimal documentation

So it is neither undisciplined nor unplanned, it is simply a lightweight process with no copromise on test quality.

Adhoc testing and Exploratory testing are as same with a small diff.

Exploratory: Without requirement docs, without functional knowledge one

can perform testing on a application is called Explolatory.

But in Adhoc testing, Req docs are available.
