Per my Interview experience, I have answered this question in this manner:

"During my B.Tech, I have developed an interest in programming and challenges involved based upon my problem solving and analytical skills."

Also, another better answer can be: "My Father/Brother is also a mechanical engineer, he has x years of exp. in mechanical field and he is not having a job at the moment. Such is the state of mechanical engineering field."

Relate things to the current opportunities in the field of mechanical engineering and make the interviewer understand your interest in IT field by specifying IT projects worked upon.
