if u have about ur tool
1. first do the work manually then compare this result with the tool producing result.
2. compare ur tool with the other similar competetive products in the market.
i.e; test whether ur tool and other tool whicn is already succeed in the market, producing the same results or not.(COMPARISION TESTING)

I think we need to do a market research on various tools depending on the type of application we are testing. Say we are testing an application madein VB with an Oracle Database, then Winrunner is going to give good results. But in some cases it may not , say ur application uses a lots of 3rd party Grids and modules which have been integrated into the application. So it depends on the type of application u r testing.

Also we need to know wot sort of testing will be performed. If u need to test the performance, u cannot use a record and playback tool, u need a performance testing tool such as Loadrunner.

Those mentioned above are general perspectives of selecting an automation tool. If i were to evaluate a tool for my clients or a customer, I would look on
to:
1. Tools available in the market, Add-ins available, there features and cost.
2. Maximum amount to be able to invest.
3. ROI factor (Return of Investment). How soon will I be able to see a profit
for investment compared to when the process was done manually?
4. Number of iteration for automation testing.
5. What are the features in the current system that needs/has to be automated?
6. Are there any tools that are currently in use by the client/company for
automation?
7. Licensing terms and conditions.
8. Customer support available for the tool.
9. PoC results achieved for different automation tools.
