Ganesh and Shankar travel abroad and take more luggage than the airlines allow. They have to pay extra money for it. They carry 52 kgs together and pay $60 and $100 respectively. Now, if the same luggage was carried by only Ganesh it would cost him $340. If the airlines charges only at one rate for extra luggage what is the maximum luggage that a person can carry without paying extra?

18 kgs

We have 4 unknowns w1,w2,a and r where w1 is weight carried by Ganesh, w2 is weight carried by Shankar, a is allowance in kg, r is the charge/kg for excess over a.

There are 4 equations.

1. w1+w2=52, 2. (52-a)*340, 3. (w1-a)*r=60 and 4. (w2-a)*r=100

divide equation 2 by 3 to get rid of r and get w1 in terms of a, divide equation 2 by 4 to get w2 in terms of a and finally we get 10a=340-160=180 and therefore a=180/10 = 18kgs.
