How to protect the system from fault current ?

What are contactors and why are they used in circuits can they protect the system from fault current ?

1st. what type of fault current?
we have lot of faults.. for ex. over load, short circuit, earth fault
we can use:
over load relay.
fuses.
toroid.
CB with over current and short circuit protection.
CT with Sepam or controller.

There are lot of protection systems, plz identify what you are going to protect so we can tell you the required equipments.
