Since the rotation of the rotor of the induction motor is in the direction of the rotating magnetic field, if we change the direction of this feld we can change the direction of the rotor. Hence, we have to change the phase sequence of the voltage applied.

By interchanging any two phases.

R----     TO    Y----   OR   B----
Y----               B----           R----
B----               R----           Y----

The rotation of single phase induction motor can be changed by exchanging the primary winding or auxiliary winding but only one winding should be reversed otherwise nothing will be happens to the direction of rotation.

The capacitor is included to reduced the starting current and used to maintain the required phase angle between two phase.

On the other hand direction of rotation of three phase induction motor can be reversed by exchanging the only two phases i.e RYB to RBY

by interchanging the two terminals keeping the third one fixed (fix R terminal and interchange Y and B)

What if all 3 phases are interchanged between 3 of them?
