I believe the question was how we will come to know and not the time it occured.

if system craches ,and automated mail generated to the developers or DBAs.you can check the mail with the login name and time ,it defines where the problem occured.

In addition to Radha's answer,I also feel there is also something called as error logging in the system,where in the developor can locate the error..

System crash: if the system is crashed no message will be displayed on the screen if it is crashed the running programs and the o/s will not respond at any cast if you want to run the system you have to restart all the un saved data will not be store in any part of the system.
This thing I know if I am wrong plz intimate me

After system has crashed a DUMP file (most likely) is created. If you'll be able to login the system again after rebooting try to find this dump file (search on Google how to find dump file, in Windows there is special settings). It'll require special skills to be able to read and interpret the dump file...
