There are two types of power transmission elements with respect to drive and they are classified as
1. Positive drive transmission elements (no loss in power and no slippage. (gears and chains)
2. Negative drive power transmission elements (loss in power and slippage occurs. (belts and ropes)

Belts, Ropes Chains and gears  are the power transmission elements. Belts Ropes and Chains are used when the distance between the shaft is large and they are negative drive elements because velocity ratio is not constant and gears are used when the distance between the shaft is small and gears are positive drive elements.
