alpha:  Alpha testing is the software prototype stage when the software is first able to run. It will not have all the intended functionality, but it will have core functions and will be able to accept inputs and generate outputs. An alpha test usually takes place in the developer's offices on a separate system.
In-depth software reliability testing, installation testing, and documentation testing are not done at alpha test time, as the software is only a prototype. Alpha tester feedback forms are not used, although the developer does request feedback on specific aspects of the software.

beta testing:The beta phase of software design exposes a new product, which has just emerged from in-house (alpha) testing, to a large number of real people, real hardware, and real usage.

The benefits of testing include:

  • Getting a look at the new features before anyone else.
  • The pleasure of finding unsuspected bugs.
  • Making our (i.e., your!) software better as a result of detecting those bugs.
  • Possibly, affecting our future direction of development through your suggestions

Alpha testing - testing of an application when development is nearing completion; minor design changes may still be made as a result of such testing. Typically done by end-users or others, not by programmers or testers.

Beta testing - testing when development and testing are essentially completed and final bugs and problems need to be found before final release. Typically done by end-users or others, not by programmers or testers.

Alpha Testing is testing the aplication in the controlled environment , before the product is released to the market. Here testing is done only by professional test engineers.

Beta testing is the type of testing done after the product is released to the market. End user can download the application and test the application. here both the end user and test engineer can test the application

Alpha testing is conducted by customer side people(model customers) before releasing the build to the end users in the presence of developers, they will find any defects are there means wheather it is defectfree or not, suppose if they find any defects yhey wiil give some suggesions to modification.

Beta is conducted by real customers in their environment wheather the appl is working correctly or not.means it is working in all environments, security problems, error messages, supporting messages,etc..this is also coducted before releasing to end users.

beta testing is done in customer in developed environment. It is done after IT reaches to the customer.
