the answer is 288 cubes are uncoloured.coz the top72 and the bottom 72 are only painted.so the remainin 144+144=288

There is an easy formula

one side painted =[(x-2)^2]*6

two side painted =[x-2]*12

three side painted=8(always)  (A cube has 8 corners)

unpainted=(x-2)^3

6^3=216

1 side painted=96

2   "       "         =48

3  "         "       =8

unpainted      = 64

  total                == 216

As Vidhya said, we can use the formula ie (n-2)*3 for unpainted answer is 64 when all the sides of the total cube are painted, but here in question only two sides are painted so we have to take into account the remaining 4 sides, so 4*36=144. 

so the answer is 64+144 = 208

First assume the cube is painted fully and find the uncoloured cubes using the formula - (n-2 )^3=(6-2)^3= 64.

Now in the question only two sides are painted so remaining 4 sides is left uncoloured.. so 4*36= 144.

So total no of uncoloured cubes = 64+144 = 208

As 2 cubes are merged you will get 216+216=532 small unit cubes.
Total number of 3 faces is 8.
So, we have to find cubes with only two faces coloured,as in a small cube if 2 face s coloured remaining 4 faces is uncoloured.
Totally in front->28,
Opposite -> 28,
Sides are 8+8=16.
Totally 72 cubes.
72 is the answer.
