basically there r two modes of power 1.off 2.on
so we have defined 2 digits comprising of a binary sytem
but if we had 3 modes of digits there wud hav been an additional status of information i.e. half on and half off...let it be 2
so when a three mode system exists there can be complications in the mode of reprsentation as in the digital systems we cannot completely realise a half on and a half of system as they are mere flip flops and we cannot design a flip flop of three discrete level

if the computer uses 3 bits we can realise complex signalling,....
like in a 2 way key system 0 can represnt 1 mode of ON 1 can represent 2nd mode of ON and the third bit may represtnt disconnected!
